Which one wins for which family?
Best for young children
Package
Transfers, kids clubs, reps and family rooms all in one booking. Less to go wrong with a 3 year old in tow.
Best for teenagers
Booking.com (if you DIY confidently)
Pick the exact hotel teens want without a package premium.
Best budget option
Depends on the week
Package wins peak July and August. Booking.com wins shoulder weeks and last minute hotel only steals.
Best premium option
Booking.com Genius level 3
Free upgrades and breakfast at independent luxury hotels you'll never find on a package.
Hidden costs most families miss
The extras that quietly add hundreds to the final bill.
Resort fees and tourist tax
Not always shown on Booking.com. Can add £50 to £150 paid at check out.
Flight extras
Bags, seats, priority boarding. £80 to £200 for a family of four return that the headline does not show.
Transfers
Private transfers for a family of four in Mallorca or Tenerife are £70 to £140 each way.
Travel insurance
Without ATOL you genuinely need it. £60 to £150 for a family week.
Currency and card fees
Booking.com pay at hotel often uses dynamic currency conversion. Use a fee free card and pay in euros.
Cancellation risk
If the airline collapses you lose the lot. It has happened to thousands of families since 2019.
What we would actually book
If you are booking a straightforward Mediterranean family week in peak summer, the all in package almost always wins on both price and stress.
If you are booking off peak, a city, an unusual destination or you want a specific independent hotel, Booking.com will usually save you money, sometimes a lot.
The real risk is overpaying for a package when the DIY version is cheaper, or doing DIY for a trip where you genuinely should have the safety net of a package. The savings report tells you which side your specific trip falls on.
Frequently asked
Is Booking.com cheaper than a package holiday?
Sometimes, but not as often as people think. Once you add flights, transfers, baggage, ATOL protection and travel insurance, the package can win on price as well as protection.
Am I protected if I book on Booking.com?
No ATOL protection. If the airline collapses or the hotel cancels, you are on your own with your card issuer. Packages include legal protection bundled in.
Why do families still book Booking.com?
Flexibility. Free cancellation up to a few days before, no deposit, and the ability to pick exactly the hotel and dates you want. Worth a lot for some trips.
What about Booking.com Flights and Booking.com Packages?
These newer products bundle hotel and flights but the protection and support is weaker than a true ATOL package. Read the terms carefully before assuming you are covered.
