Why family of five pricing is so much worse than family of four

The hotel industry standardised around the four person room twenty years ago and has not really moved. A double bed plus two singles, or a double plus a bunk, is the standard family room. The fifth person triggers either a second room (often at full double rate) or a sofa bed upgrade fee. Tour operators inherit this and add their own per person flight cost on top.

The result is that a family of five going through the standard booking flow pays roughly 30 to 50 percent more than a family of four for the same week. The fix is to book formats that price by space (villa, apartment, mobile home, family suite) rather than by person. That is the entire trick.

Formats that genuinely work for five

Five formats consistently work without the second room penalty. Villa or apartment rentals price by property, not by person. Eurocamp and Siblu mobile homes price by mobile home (most sleep six or eight). Cruise family staterooms sleep five in some Disney, MSC and Norwegian cabin categories. Specific hotel chains have proper five person family rooms (Holiday Village, Marella Cruises family inside cabins, certain Ikea-priced Spanish AI). And finally, off-park hotels at theme park destinations almost always have five and six berth rooms when on-park hotels do not.

Villas: the default answer if you can drive there or fly to a near airport

A three bedroom villa with a pool in the western Algarve, Mallorca, Crete or the Greek Peloponnese typically prices between £1,200 and £2,500 a week in shoulder season. Add flights for five (£600 to £1,100) and food, and a family of five lands a proper week away for £3,200 to £4,800 all in. That is often less than two adjoining hotel rooms at a four star AI for the same family.

Look at small villa specialists rather than the big aggregator sites. Travelopo, Olivers Travels and Vintage Travel routinely have better stock and clearer pricing than Booking.com for villas.

Mobile homes and camping: the format five travels best in

If you can drive, the French mobile home holiday is the format that five people enjoys most for the least money. A six berth Eurocamp or Siblu mobile home gives every kid a bed and the parents a proper bedroom door. Pools, kids' clubs, other families. Late June or early September prices a family of five at around £2,800 to £3,600 including the ferry crossing.

Avoid August prices, which roughly double, and avoid the cheapest base mobile home grade which has a noticeably smaller living area.

If you have to fly and stay in a hotel: the three resorts that price five fairly

Some chains genuinely price family rooms for five at the same per person rate as four person rooms. The standouts in 2026 are the TUI Holiday Village resorts (Mallorca, Costa del Sol, Aliathon Cyprus), the Iberostar Selection family suites, and Jet2's four star AI family rooms in the Costa de la Luz. All three offer real five berth rooms, not a sofa bed pretending to be a fifth bed.

Avoid most Greek mainland and Cyprus AI resorts for five. The rooms exist on paper but are often sold as four plus child, with the fifth person treated as an upsell.

Disneyland Paris for five specifically

Disneyland Paris is the destination where family of five pricing hurts most. The on-park rooms that genuinely sleep five are Hotel Cheyenne family rooms, Sequoia Lodge family rooms, and a small number of Newport Bay Club club rooms. Off-park, Explorers Hotel and Magic Circus both have proper six berth rooms at half the on-park rate.

Cruises: the underrated five person option

Disney, MSC, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean all have cabins that sleep five. Disney's Concierge family staterooms are excellent but premium. MSC's Aurea family balcony cabins are the best value at the five person mark, with a 7 night Mediterranean cruise for five in 2026 landing around £4,500 to £5,800 all in.

For families who would otherwise have written off cruising as too expensive for five, this is worth pricing properly. The per person rate often comes in below a comparable AI when food and entertainment are factored in.
