School holidays are when UK families pay the most for the least. The same villa that cost £1,200 in late June costs £2,800 in late July. The same flight that was £140 return in September is £340 in August. None of that is going away in 2026. What can change is where you spend the school holiday weeks, because some destinations price the school holiday premium much more gently than others. Here is the working list for 2026.

How big the school holiday premium actually is in 2026
Across the Mediterranean, the average summer school holiday premium versus mid June is now 38 to 55 percent. That is the headline number. Within it, individual destinations vary from a 22 percent premium (Bulgaria, Albania, parts of Turkey) up to a 75 percent premium (Mallorca, Ibiza, Greek small islands). The destination matters more than the week, which is a change from five years ago when everywhere went up by roughly the same amount.
The fix is to choose destinations where the premium is at the lower end of that range, not to try and beat August itself. August is what it is. The savings come from picking the right country.

The four destinations that genuinely still work in August
Bulgaria, Albania, Turkey and (with caveats) Tunisia are the four destinations where the August premium is small enough that the trip remains decent value. All four have direct flights from multiple UK airports, working tourism infrastructure, and AI or B&B accommodation at prices a UK family can still book without wincing.
Bulgaria's Sunny Beach is the easiest to book. Albania's southern beach towns are the best looking. Turkey has the best resorts and the best food. Tunisia has the lowest prices but the most variable hotel quality. For a first August trip outside the standard Spain or Greece routine, we would default to Turkey.

Destinations to skip in August
Mallorca, Ibiza and the Greek small islands (Santorini, Mykonos, Skiathos) all price the August premium at the top of the range, often above 60 percent. The hotels are the same hotels. The food is the same food. You pay roughly double for the same trip you could have had in June. Skip them in August and book them in June or September instead.
Italy is also worth avoiding for budget reasons in August, less because of accommodation and more because restaurant prices in tourist areas hit a level that makes the whole trip uncomfortable. A family pizza dinner of £90 in central Sorrento is not unusual.
School holiday weeks that cost less than others
Not every school holiday week is the same. The expensive weeks are the two middle weeks of August (school holidays peak across the UK and most of Europe). The relatively cheaper weeks are the first week of the summer break (most schools break at slightly different times so demand is not yet at full peak) and the last week before September (families with younger kids start drifting back).
The price difference between week one of the summer holidays and week three is typically 12 to 20 percent. That alone can be £400 for a family of four. If your school's term dates give you flexibility, book the first week or the last week, not the middle.

Half-term holidays: where the maths is different
Half-terms are not as expensive as the summer holidays in absolute terms, but the premium versus the surrounding weeks is often steeper because the windows are so short. October half-term is consistently the best value half-term for warm weather. Tenerife, Lanzarote, Madeira and southern Cyprus all still have warm weather and prices that have not jumped much over September.
February half-term is the trap. Ski demand pushes Alpine prices up sharply, and even beach destinations rise because UK families looking for sun in February have nowhere else to go. The Canaries see a 40 to 60 percent jump over January for the same hotel.
How to land a sub-£3,500 family-of-four holiday in summer 2026
Three habits do most of the work. First, pick from the low-premium destinations above (Bulgaria, Albania, Turkey, Tunisia). Second, fly midweek (Tuesday to Tuesday saves £200 to £400 versus Saturday to Saturday). Third, book the room only and add a kitchen rather than defaulting to AI in destinations where eating out is cheap (Bulgaria, Albania).
If you do all three, a family of four can have a proper week in summer 2026 for £2,700 to £3,300. If you do none of them, the same week in Mallorca or Crete costs £4,800 to £5,800. The destination and the format account for almost all of that gap.
